ABOUT THE SHOW

Cimes et cieux

Pierre-François Ouellette art contemporain is pleased to present Cimes et cieux, an exhibition featuring three long-time collaborators of the gallery Glenda Leon, Marc Audette and Edward Maloney; and welcoming Lise Beaudry for the first time. Through photography and video, the invited artists represent fleeting experiences in nature that are caught as the trees touch the sky.

Lise Beaudry is interested in photographing treetops at a specific time of year – when the trees themselves are almost completely stripped of their leaves, and set against a sky on the verge of snow. These personal and ephemeral vistas emerge during long car rides between Toronto and Earlton, the northern Ontario village where she grew up.

Edward Maloney’s Latitude series explores the relationship between travelling in a bus and the development of an abstracted vision of colour. His blurred and luminous landscapes are based on Polaroids taken by the artist while traveling in southern Quebec.

Marc Audette photographs skies as dusk falls. This interest has led him to travel all across the Americas. In his works, canopies of trees accentuate the ambient darkness of the forest landscape, and draw attention to the disappearing light in the night sky. The canopy itself, as the artist discovered, is a habitat rich in life and sounds.

Glenda Leon’s video Delirio II invites us to "listen to things and to watch sound." What appears as a solitary tree within a landscape transforms in a vibrant and unexpected flash.

The gallery’s front window space features a photographic and light-based installation by Marc Audette from his series The Line. This intervention incorporates a portable lighting system that was repurposed by the artist for use in the forests of the Americas. The bright line of light that also runs through the artist’s photograph operates like a drawing tool, exploring and embracing the landscape while suggesting new narrative paths.

Cimes et cieux brings together a diverse group of works that all reflect our own natural desire to catch, and to hold onto the transient in life.

Marc Audette studied fine art at the University of Quebec in Hull and earned a Masters in Visual Arts from York University. His work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally including Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal, Le Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, PlazaArte Medellin, Galerie 44 (Toronto), the McLaren Art Centre (Barrie) , DiVA Videoart Fair (New York) and Art Gallery of Burlington. He is a founding member of l’Association des groupes en arts visuels francophones (AGAV). In addition to teaching in the Faculty of Fine Arts at York’s Keele campus, he teaches a visual arts course in the Multidisciplinary Studies Department at the Glendon campus, and has been curator of the Glendon Gallery since 2001. He is an active member of Le Laboratoire (or Le LABO), a francophone production space in Toronto dedicated to research, production, training and showings in the field of multimedia visual arts. His work can be found in several public and corporate collections including the City of Ottawa, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP.

Lise Beaudry is a Franco-Ontarian artist originally from Earlton, a rural town near the Ontario-Québec border. Now residing in Toronto, Beaudry is a Professor in the Art and Art History program at Sheridan College and the University of Toronto Mississauga. She holds a BFA from Concordia University (1997) and a MFA from York University (2006). Her photographic and video work has been presented across Canada and internationally including Les Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie, Arles (1997), Grant Gallery, Vancouver (1999) ASpace, Toronto (2000), Biennial of Young Artists, Romania (2004), Gallery 44, Toronto (2006), Ice Follies, North Bay (2006), AXENÉO7, Gatineau (2010), Art Gallery of Hamilton (2011), Art Gallery of Mississauga (2012). In 2012, Beaudry won the BMW Exhibition Prize at the Contact Photography Festival.

GLENDA LEÓN

Glenda León lives and works in Havana and Madrid. She received a BA in art history in Cuba and an MA in New Media Academy of Media Arts in Cologne, Germany. She exhibits her work actively in Cuba (Havana Biennial, editions 2000, 2006, 2009, 2012 and 2015), France (Palais de Tokyo and Centre Georges Pompidou), Germany (Museum fur Neu Kunst and Museum Ludwig), and Canada (Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Toronto Nuit Blanche, Prefix Institute). Her works belong to the several collections of museums and foundations including the Museum of Fine Arts (Houston), Rhode Island School of Design Museum (Providence), Centre Pompidou, Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal and Perez Art Museum in Miami. She represented Cuba at the Venice Biennale 2013.

She is interested in interstices between visible and invisible, between sound and silence, between ephemeral and eternal.

Edward Maloney is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Montreal. His work and collaborations have been featured at POP Montreal International Music Festival, Le Festival Montréal en lumière and Nuit Blanche in Montreal, and in multiple Canadian galleries including in Toronto at Show and Tell Gallery and Pierre-François Ouellette art contemporain and in Montreal at Red Bird Gallery, PFOAC221 and Les Territoires, Montreal. He was selected to represent Canada at the World Event Young Artists in Nottingham (UK) during the Cultural Olympiad in September 2012. Edward Maloney had his first museum exhibition in a duo with Marc Audette at the Art Gallery of Burlington in 2016. His works are in private collections including TD Bank Group.
