RIPLEY WHITESIDE
Pierre-Francois Ouellette art contemporain is pleased to present "These Waters Are Alive", a solo exhibition of new works by Ripley Whiteside.
The group of watercolor and walnut ink paintings and prints that make up These Waters Are Alive engages with landscape in transformation, ecology in motion, and the premise that we may not know as much as we think we do about how our present and future are being shaped by a swiftly changing climate. At the present moment, I think it is important to consider the genre of landscape painting as climate crisis painting; I am particularly interested in unintended consequences of our impact, and changes within ecosystems that are difficult to perceive or understand. Water is of course central to how land is shaped and life is sustained, and also functions materially in this project: paper is stained by evaporated pools and rivulets of color washes. These techniques, which have been guided by experimentation, yield abstract forms expressing complexities inherent to landscapes in flux.

QAVAVAU MANUMIE
Pierre-François Ouellette art contemporain is pleased to present a selection of Qavavau Manumie's drawings from 1982 to 2016.
Qavavau was born in Brandon, Manitoba in 1958 where his mother, Paunichea, was hospitalized for treatment of tuberculosis. He returned to Cape Dorset as a very young child and has lived there since. Qavavau has demonstrated a range of stylistic abilities over the years – from the very literal to the more expressive. His work is idiosyncratic and often amusing in his depictions of Inuit legends and mythology, Arctic wildlife and contemporary aspects of Inuit life. Qavavau is the latest among the second generation to attract critical acclaim from the contemporary arts audience in the south.

LISE BEAUDRY
Underscape is a video shot with an underwater viewing system – a camera device used when ice fishing to locate fish. This camera is be plunged through an opening in the ice of the frozen lake and floats close to the under surface of the ice.
"Shot in the icy water beneath a lake’s frozen surface with an underwater viewing system normally used to locate fish, it depicts an enigmatic underwater world. The top of the moving image is light, almost heavenly, as sunlight permeates the ice and illuminates some of the underworld, leaving the lower part of the image a dark, cloudy and ambiguous area. It moves slowly, and has been edited in a manner that suggests choreography. "
