ABOUT THE SHOW

Pierre-François Ouellette art contemporain is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new work by Ed Pien at VOLTA NY. This exhibition offers an intimate look at the artist’s multi-faceted practice, featuring a large-scale paper cut work, a rope installation and works from his new “Spectral Drawings” series. This presentation at VOLTA NY precedes several high profile exhibitions featuring Ed Pien in 2012, including his participation in the Sydney Biennale and “Oh Canada” – a survey of important Canadian contemporary artists at MASS MoCA.

Now in its 5th edition, VOLTA NY was introduced in 2008 as a partner to the prestigious Armory Show. VOLTA NY was conceived as a tightly curated solo project fair highlighting the best of today's cutting-edge art to complement its more established sibling. The individual presentations require direct involvement and the presence of the artist, giving the visitor more direct access akin to a studio visit.

Ed Pien is a multidisciplinary artist based in Toronto. He has recently been selected by Artistic Directors Gerald McMaster (Curator, AGO) and Catherine de Zegher (former Guest Curator, Department of Drawings, MoMA) to participate in the18th Biennale of Sydney, and by Denise Markonish to present a new work at MassMOCA in 2012. Of note in 2013, a two person show with Kara Walker at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Pien has exhibited nationally and internationally including the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; the Drawing Centre, New York; Museum of Art and Design, New York; Centro Nacional é las Artes, Mexico City; the Goethe Institute, Berlin; Middlesbrough Art Gallery, UK; W139, Amsterdam; Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver; The Contemporary Art Museum in Monterrey, Mexico; Bluecoat, Liverpool; Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto and La Biennale de Montreal 2000 and 2002. His ambitious large-scale installations, drawings and paper cuts are featured in the permanent collections of the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, and the Vancouver Art Gallery. Pien’s featured participation in the 2012 Sydney Biennale solidifies the importance and influence of his work at an international level.

Pien draws on sources both Eastern and Western to create his work, including Asian ghost stories, hell scrolls, calligraphic traditions and the works of Hieronymus Bosch and Francisco Goya, creating sensual, drawing-based installations using ink and translucent paper (like Earthly Delights in the collection of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts). The spectator is invited to walk into these floor-to-ceiling environments and approach the half-human, half-animal monsters within. Continuing in the vein of light and dark and experiential worlds, the artist presents an intertwined body of work, inviting visitors as witnesses and participants.
